The Orchard is a fledgling permaculture project located in Platonas, north Corfu. Our aim is to create a polyculture system, better known as “Food Forest”. In the property there are already well established trees, mainly Olives and Figs. We plan to diversify and intensify the life above and below the soil in order to establish a self-fertilising and regenerative system. We are in the initial stages of supporting soil fertility and biodiversity, mainly perennial plants.
We will offer a guided tour on the topics of permaculture principles and means for supporting soil fertility and life in the soil, including worm farms, biochar and JADAM fertility methods.
Biochar is a form of soil amendment, which is inspired by the Amazonian Terra Preta. Biochar is used to enrich the fertility of the soil, by providing shelter to microbial life and soaked water, to name just two of its functions. In the tour you’ll learn different methods for charging biochar before spreading it.
JADAM organic farming is a method that is based on Korean and Buddhist ideas. It emphasizes farming in harmony with ecological principles and the cyclical use of resources from within the system.
