Villa Sto Dasos
Kelia, Kassiopi
The gardens at Sto Dasos were established some seventeen years ago. Designed by Alithea Johns of Skopos Design and featured in Rachel Weaving’s book “Gardens of Corfu” this is a garden that, despite its sophistication, sits naturally in its site. Above the entrance courtyard the planting on the steep terraced bank gradually gives way to the wild landscape. Naturally occurring boulders and slabs of rock have been incorporated into the design whilst cut forms of the same stone have been used for walls and paving. Antique brick of Corfiot clay is used for wall toppings and to define designed spaces within the paved areas.
A series of patios surround the house on its different levels, each with its own character offering a mix of intimate and entertaining spaces. At the back of the house the largest of these patios looks out to the sea and the Albanian mountains beyond. Garden shapes and colours are kept very simple here and the edging of rosemary and glossy abelia is clipped aiming to reflect the shape of the Cavo Barbaro promontory in the distance.
Below the house and pool a path leads down into an ancient olive grove, a wilder space enhanced by plantings of rosemary, lavender and thyme and edged by more olive terraces merging into the wilder landscape beyond.
