Sinies Community Garden

Sinies

The Sinies Community Garden & Composting Site is the result of a long-term commitment by local Social Cooperative Enterprise, SIN.PRAXI, to demonstrate how the principles of the circular economy can be applied at a community level with benefits for everyone.

Besides supporting the development of the area in a variety of other ways, SIN.PRAXI has been operating a recycling collection scheme for businesses in the north east of Corfu, during the summer season, and has established the Ionian Region’s first and only licensed recycling Green Spot. Together with this lies the responsibility to help raise awareness and inform individuals about responsible waste management, to which end SIN.PRAXI has formed a collaboration with local schools.

The Community Garden might not be something you’ve seen before in Corfu: it’s more of a cross between a ‘wild garden’ and an ‘outdoor classroom,’ with zoned areas for exploratory play, planting and growing, and environmental investigation. In keeping with Green Spot philosophy, many of the materials used are reclaimed, reused and up-cycled.

The development of the Garden has brought joy and established strong bonds amongst community members as young and old work together, passing on valuable information to new generations of gardeners and learners.

So, don’t expect to see manicured lawns and mature planting but rather a ‘work in progress’ with great potential. We welcome you to walk independently around the site or engage with our volunteers who will be available at the designated times, and who can explain more about our projects as well as take visitors around the recycling Green Spot next door. We’ll be happy to hear advice and comments about what you see on your visit and even happier if any of you would like to drop us off a little cutting from your garden!

Check the Garden Festival Schedule for information about the workshops and events being held in the Community Garden through the week and, of course, everyone is warmly welcome to join us for our opening celebration at 16:00 on Saturday 27th April.
