Gastouri Estate

Gastouri

About 40 decades ago this five hectare property was a ruined 200 year old farmhouse. The previous owner restored the building and transformed the grounds into an ornamental mediterranean garden on a hillside with land and sea views. The garden consists of mainly mediterranean shrubs and perennials, with a vineyard, wildflower walks through the native woodland. There are bulbs, many imported many years ago from the Fillipi nursery in southern France. A large annual bed provides summer colour. Several mature trees including olive trees and cypresses have been included, tying in with the surrounding landscape. The same purpose is served by the hardscape, which consists of paved areas, paths and stairs made from local stone slabs, fieldstone cobbles, old bricks and pebbles. The walled garden in front of the hall features colourful combinations of flowering annual, perennials and bulbs. Many grouped potted plants in tradition of the avli flank the two arched entries to the house. In order to minimise the use of water, the garden is zoned roughly into three zones according to the summer watering needs. Much of the garden survives without water all year round.
